This is the first posted exercise, thus will be taken as an example of the method.
Each excercise is centered on a piece of music from a well-known composer. As an example, here we consider the first 15 bars – the exposition – of the famous sonatina op. 36 n°1 by Muzio Clementi. Different versions of the score can be downloaded, where either parts or staffs are hidden.
The idea is to:
i. Pick one of the three exercises;
ii. Fill in the empty spaces;
iii. Compare your work with the original one. Either listen to the audio (Musescore recording) or have a look at the score.
The exposed procedure is intended for every piece I will post, and is the basis for learning how to compose directly by confronting with those who know the job. Good luck!
